Local Libations: Black & White Milkshake!!

Happy Friday everyone!  I’m back with another installment of RecipeRelay’s Garden Fresh Cocktails.  This week is a fun one for me – Sarah’s Relay Veggie Burger Delight recipe immediately made me think MILKSAHKE!!  Who doesn’t love a burger and a shake on a hot summer day?  My next thought was: why not make a classic chocolate milkshake with a maraschino cherry on top – but with a cocktail twist?

Every great milkshake, even a cocktail shake, starts with great ice cream – it is the most important ingredient.  The best ice cream is usually made in small batches from quality ingredients that are infused with love and care.  I recommend doing some research on local ice cream makers  to find the one you like best – it’s fun and tasty research!  One of my local favorites is Mariposa Ice Cream, founded in 2000 by a fourth generation dairy farmer, they make the ice cream right on site.  They don’t use eggs in their recipe, and their ice cream contains 1/3 less sugar and 1/2 the air of commercial ice creams.  Mariposa lets the ice cream speak for itself.

A black & white milkshake is a New York variation on the traditional chocolate shake: it is made with chocolate syrup mixed into a base of vanilla ice cream, San Diego ingredients mixed up New York style!  Delicious vanilla is the true test of a great ice cream and the vanilla ice cream from Mariposa is no ordinary vanilla, rich and creamy only begin to describe what this dynamically decadent treat is all about.

The chocolate flavor will come from the  Godiva Chocolate Liqueur; Luxardo Marschino Originale will provide a whisper of Maraschino cherry.  Luxardo, a dry liqueur made from Marasca cherries, has a more earthy cherry flavor than the actual juice of Maraschino cherries.  When it is added to the shake, it sinks through to the bottom, a phantom cherry awaiting your last sip.

Black and White Milkshake

Prep time: 5 minutes

Yield: 1 serving

Tools- blender, shot glass


  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. chocolate liqueur
  • splash of maraschino liqueur

Cooking Directions

  1. Add 2 two scoops of vanilla ice cream to blender.
  2. Add the vodka and chocolate liqueur.
  3. Add a handful of ice.
  4. Blend until smooth.
  5. Pour blender contents into glass- top with splash of Maraschino liqueur and a dollop of ice cream.
  6. Enjoy!
